Uni v4 Hooks: powering the next degen cycle?
Uniswap v4 hooks turn swaps into programmable mechanics: bonding curves, NFT generation, games, dynamic fees, yield routing, and fully hook-native assets.
TL;DR
⚡️ TL;DR
Back in Jan 2025 Uniswap shipped v4 with this thing called hooks — custom code that lives inside the pool lifecycle (init / swap / liquidity / donate).
For a while only infra nerds cared (Angstrom, Flaunch). Retail had zero idea what to do with it.
Then May 2026 happened. Sato ripped to ~$40M FDV in 4 days running a bonding curve straight inside a hook. Unipeg (uPEG) hit >$3000 per token after OpenSea's Adam Hollander posted about it.
This isn't "DEX 2.0" anymore — it's a new asset class, where the swap itself becomes a generator (of pics, NFTs, scarcity, whatever you want).
v4 cumulative volume crossed $100B by mid-2025, DefiLlama tracks ~2,150 active pools right now. Hundreds of hooks deployed across chains.
The take: we're at the front of hook season. What ERC-404 did for NFT/DeFi mashups in 2024, v4 hooks are about to do for basically anything you can express on top of a swap.
First time ever the pool mechanic is the project mechanic.
Part 1. What v4 Hooks actually are (for anyone who just woke up)
Quick version: pre-v4 a Uniswap pool was a dumb little machine — x*y=k, took a token, gave a token, charged 0.3% fee. That's it. Any custom logic — buybacks, dynamic fees, vesting, limits — had to be jerry-rigged on top with separate contracts and wrapper layers.
v4 hooks are plugins that fire inside the pool lifecycle itself. Every v4 pool can have its own hook contract. Hooks are optional — you specify the contract when you create the pool via PoolManager.initialize .
There are 4 callback points (with before/after for each = 8 total):
Initialize — pool creation
Modify Position — add/remove liquidity
Swap — the swap itself (this is where the juice is)
Donate — donating into the pool
What this changes in practice:
Custom curves** instead of x*y=k (stable pools, bonding curves, dutch auctions — anything)
Skim extra fees into your own treasury straight off the swap
Mint NFTs/tokens/whatever at the moment of swap
Block sells for the first N minutes (anti-rug)
Route liquidity into Aave when it's idle (rehypothecation)
Technically the permission flags are encoded in the hook's address prefix, so hooks deploy via CREATE2 with a mined salt. Sounds annoying but it means the hook can't lie about its permissions — they're literally in the address.
And here's the spicy bit: Async Hooks can fully replace the core swap logic — the hook takes full custody of the user's tokens and decides what happens. Uniswap doesn't enforce execution rules, which means a malicious or buggy hook can lock funds or straight-up steal them .
Killer feature and audit nightmare in the same breath.
Part 2. How this works on the degen playground
The old playbook was simple: deploy an ERC-20, throw liquidity on v2/v3, then TG + KOLs + pump. All the token "logic" (taxes, blacklists, snipe protection) lived inside the ERC-20 itself and inevitably became spaghetti — because Uniswap had no idea about those tricks, and any transfer tax would break the router.
With v4 all the "token logic" migrates into the hook on the pool. Which means:
The ERC-20 stays clean and standard
All the degenerate behavior lives in the hook, which Uniswap explicitly calls on every swap
The Uniswap router handles dynamic fees, custom curves, all of it cleanly
You can emit any side effect at swap time: mint an NFT, burn a token, change supply, accumulate into a reserve, update on-chain game state
So a swap stops being a utility op and becomes the primary event" the product is built around.
Which is exactly what the first wave of hook-native degen plays is doing. Let's go through them.
Part 3. Examples — who's already shipping
🦄 @unipegv4 - "swap as a generator"
What: uPEG uses a custom v4 hook to render a unique 24×24 collectible image fully on-chain — no IPFS, no external storage. Each image is tied to a specific integer amount of uPEG: 1, 2, 3, and so on .
How: the custom v4 hook creates a hash encoding transaction details, and an on-chain SVG renderer uses that hash to generate a 24×24 unicorn. Entire process on-chain, supply cap = 10,000 .
The trick: when a user's balance crosses an integer threshold, they receive the matching object. The fractional part stays as a normal token, the integer part births a collectible . This is not ERC-404 — that tried to merge ERC-20 and ERC-721 by switching standards. Here the swap itself is the generative act.
Numbers: after OpenSea CMO Adam Hollander and a Uniswap team member tweeted about it, the price briefly cleared $1000 over the weekend, then settled around $560 .
The name: it's an etymology twist. Unipeg was the name Hayden Adams wanted in 2018 (Unicorn + Pegasus), but @VitalikButerin suggested Uniswap. In 2025 the name accidentally described exactly what v4 made possible .
"Peg as a rule enforced at the point of exchange" — that's literally what a v4 hook is.
Why it matters: this is the first project where the visual = a function of market activity. Every trade in the pool births a new object.
🪙 sato - "digital scarcity without miners"
What: ERC-20 on Ethereum with a bonding curve baked straight into a v4 hook. No pre-mine, no team allocation, no admin keys, no upgrade or pause. Sato issues via bonding curve: user pays ETH into the hook contract, system auto-mints Sato per a fixed math formula. On sell, you return Sato to the system in exchange for ETH .
Two-phase mechanic: until supply hits 99% it's the "issuance phase" — the user trades directly against the system via the curve. All ETH stays in the hook as a system reserve permanently. After 99% the curve stops, and the token starts trading on the secondary market (normal Uniswap pools) . 0.3% fee on both buy and sell, and that fee stays in the hook forever — nobody can withdraw it . So it's a genuinely serverless, unmanaged Ponzi curve (not an insult — that's the technical description).
Numbers: $40M FDV in 4 days, settled around . Zero pre-hype, just an official site and the contract .
But. Drama already kicked off: community devs spotted a state mismatch between ethCum and totalMintedFair inside the hook — users buying on a higher curve but selling on a lower one. Some ETH stays in the reserve but can't be fully redeemed via the sell path . Team updated the docs, acknowledged the structural price gap. Ironically this is part of the lore — they pitch Sato as a retelling of the Bitcoin story: BTC encoded all costs into mining energy, Sato encodes all costs into the system reserve. Each Sato corresponds to a real amount of ETH inside the system .
Why it matters: this is the first time a bonding curve without a separate protocol contract — the curve itself is the protocol. All logic in one hook. No frontend even — just an on-chain aggregator at sat0swap.org routing between the curve and the v4 pool.
🎮 @unimonapp - "a full game inside one hook"
What: Unimon is an original NFT battle game fully contained and managed inside a Uniswap V4 hook. You enter by swapping ETH into the custom UMN/ETH pool, which mints the Unimon tokens and NFTs you need. Once all NFTs are minted, hatching begins. Unimon battle until one is left standing — a group of 32 winners split the prize pool .
Three phases: Mint → Hatch → War. Battles need two txs: first one requests on-chain randomness, second one finalizes the result. Attacker's Attack vs defender's Defense, plus item modifiers.S1 ran in spring 2025, S2 in August 2025 — even Bankless played. Uniswap Foundation flags Unimon in its Builder Updates as proof that hooks can support complex games natively .
Why it matters: this is proof that a hook can work not as a "pool feature" but as a fully on-chain game engine. No off-chain servers, no oracles (besides VRF for randomness).
🎯 @flaunchgg - a degen launchpad on steroids
Flaunch.gg, a new launchpad on Base, uses v4 to route 100% of trading fees to creators instead of centralized platforms. Via its custom v4 hook "The Meme Stream," devs can claim up to 1% of every swap in ETH without owning tokens or affecting price. Ownership itself is tokenized as an NFT you can transfer to any wallet .
Mechanic: At launch on Flaunch a token has a fixed price for the first 30 minutes, then price discovery starts. During that window you can't sell — protects early buyers. The internal swap pool pays LPs in ETH (not ETH+token), and the token portion of fees is used to fill the next order. Reduces sell pressure from LPs dumping rewards. Hooks also park ETH in Aave to generate yield for LPs .
Numbers: As of early Feb 2025: Flaunch had already launched 2,135 tokens, done $75.6M of v4 volume, and paid out 51 ETH to creators . First week post-launch.
Why it matters: Flaunch proved an anti-extractive launchpad is possible — all fees go to the creator and buybacks, not to Pump.fun. That's a political statement.
Other stuff already running in the v4 hook zoo
From awesome-uniswap-hooks and Uniswap Foundation Builder Updates:
0@dopplerprotocol — a liquidity bootstrapping protocol that doesn't burn LP tokens. Liquidity is generated in a Liquidity Factory, then pulled into a Migration Factory and deposited into a generic AMM position. Minimizes MEV, and vesting prevents launch-phase rugs.
@angstromxyz (Sorella Labs) — a DEX that defends LPs. The hook ensures only staked Angstrom validators can execute swaps — effectively an on-chain DEX running on a decentralized node network.
@zora creator coins — use hooks for fee conversion into the payout token and reward distribution.
@clanker_world — a memecoin launchpad with hooks for protocol fee management and MEV protection.
@eulerfinance — a DEX with a built-in AMM powered by Euler's lending infra, integrated with the v4 hook architecture.
@SiloFinance — isolated lending markets built on top of v4 hooks. TVL grew from $85M in late 2024 to over $200M by mid-August 2025.
The big picture: as of early 2026, @DefiLlama tracks ~2,154 active v4 pools. Cumulative v4 volume crossed $100B back in mid-2025 and has kept scaling. Hook count is in the hundreds across all chains. v4 went from $85M TVL in early March 2025 to over $1B by mid-year — the fastest TVL ramp in Uniswap history.
Part 4. Our takes
This is a new category, and it's bigger than memes
When ERC-404 came out we all laughed and called it a hack. That hack ran an entire season. Hooks are a much cleaner abstraction — not a standards hack, but an extension point Uniswap built on purpose.
Analogies if you need an intuition:
Hooks ~ Smart Contracts 2.0 — same relationship smart contracts have to EVM bytecode. Same level of customization, but attached to a liquidity event.
Hooks ~ webhooks for DeFi — literally: "when X happens in the pool, call my code." Anyone who's wired up SaaS integrations gets it instantly.
Hooks ~ Steam Workshop for AMMs — Uniswap built the runtime, anyone can mod on top.
Sato and Unipeg aren't "v4 oddities," they're the first wave
They already prove:
Mechanism > narrative — market's tired of dumb memes, ready to pay for a new mechanic. Sato did $40M FDV with no KOL push, no premine, no team allocation. That's a signal.
Swap as the act of generation — Unipeg proved the trading process itself can be the product, not just the path to it.
Self-contained protocols — games (Unimon), launchpads (Flaunch), monetary systems (Sato) live entirely inside one hook. No frontend = no attack surface, no team rug, no "we'll shut off the contract."
Where this could take us (optimistic case)
v4 hooks become the "App Store moment" for DeFi.
v3 was a great DEX. v4 is a devtool platform. In April 2026 the Uniswap Foundation launched a Hooks Marketplace with a $500M incentive program — pulled in $3.4B TVL in newly created pools on day one . That's not "Uniswap success," that's confirmation that hooks = the primary entry point for new DeFi innovation**.
2. Every primitive gets a "hook-native" version.
Options? → on-chain options via a hook that computes payoff on each swapPrediction markets? → UniMarket is already doing thisStables? → custom curves for recursive pegsPerps? → in theory possible via async hooksRWA with compliance? → Paxos's USDL already runs this (KYC via hook)
3. NFT/PFP rebirth through v4.
Unipeg is the first swallow. Next up:- PFP collections where traits depend on the full swap history of the wallet- Generative art where the drop = pool volume in the past hour- On-chain games like Unimon but with economics tied to a real token's liquidity
4. A new asset class: "hook tokens."
LP tokens but for hook revenue. Flaunch already has revenue NFTs (1% of swaps), but this is going to scale. Picture "a share in a hook" as a standard financial instrument — tokenized cash flow from a specific hook.
5. Hooks become the new memecoin battleground.
Right now every memecoin is the same. Once degens realize the contract itself can be part of the lore (Sato = scarcity via curve, Unipeg = swap as art), we get a new race: who designs the most cringe/genius mechanic. And that's good for our audience — it's content we should be unpacking.
6. Risk side — a security disaster waiting to happen.
Not glossing over it. Async Hooks can fully replace swap logic — meaning a hook can steal funds, lock a tx, or manipulate price via in-pool front-running. Hacken's audit framework already flags this as a unique security concern . There will be hacks. There will be hook-based rugs. We're at the very start.
